Dix Hills, NY - The Art League of Long Island is proud to announce the continuation of its mental health initiative with a PTSD Workshop, titled "ART of Healing," scheduled for Thursday, May 23rd, 2024, from 4 to 6 p.m. This workshop, led by esteemed East End artist John Melillo, a Disabled Vietnam Veteran and member of the Art League, will focus on the therapeutic power of art for veterans, first responders and their families.

Building upon last year's successful "Art Heals the Mindful Soul" initiative, the Art League remains committed to supporting mental wellness through artistic expression. The "ART of Healing" workshop provides a safe and nurturing space for participants to explore the healing potential of painting under the guidance of John Melillo.  Drawing from his own experiences battling PTSD, John discovered solace and newfound purpose through art, his journey from trauma to triumph serves as an inspiration to many.

"We all have our battles to fight," John expressed. "But through art, we can find a path to healing and self-discovery. Painting saved my life, and now I'm committed to helping others find their own sense of peace and purpose."

As a notable addition, The Art League of Long Island holds special significance in John Melillo's artistic journey, as it was the first place where he ever took a painting class.

In addition to the PTSD Workshop, the Art League is excited to announce an upcoming exhibition and programs in June, focusing on the theme of memory. As part of this initiative, artists and participants will explore the intricate interplay between art and memory, delving into personal narratives and collective experiences.

"We are thrilled to continue our mental health initiative with these upcoming events," remarked Marianne Della Croce, Executive Director. "Art has the power to transcend boundaries and facilitate healing on a profound level. Through our workshops and exhibitions, we aim to provide a platform for reflection, connection, and growth."

Stay tuned for more information on the June events, including the memory-focused exhibition and workshops. Further details will be announced in the coming weeks.

The "ART of Healing" workshop is free of charge and we invite veterans, first responders, active military personnel, their families, and the community-at-large to participate in these transformative events. Registration for the "ART of Healing" workshop is now open, and spaces are limited.

The Art League of Long Island will be taking donations during the PTSD Workshop for the XYZ Company to make a direct impact in supporting families like NYPD Detective Jonathan Dillard, after the recent events so close to home.
