Clubs and Organizations

January 27, 2023

From: Arts Gowanus

Hello art lovers,
We hope everyone's 2023 is off to a great start!

We have been quietly planning our year of programming, and safe to say it's going to be an amazing year! In the meantime, here's some great stuff happening in our community! Keep Scrolling!

BUT FIRST....
CHiPS need our help! Please help one of our favorite neighborhood organizations!

"The city has turned the Holiday Inn Express located at 625 Union Street around the corner from CHiPS into a temporary shelter for migrants from Latin America who arrived last week. We have seen our numbers skyrocket in terms of our breakfast and lunch services now serving 100 meals for breakfast and 300 for lunch. We can't sustain this without help." Donations are welcome 9-4 M-F or donate $ on their website

CALLING ALL LOCAL MURALISTS!

We're starting an exciting new mural initiative this spring; please fill out this form HERE if you're interested in fairly-paid mural work, and we'll be in touch with more information in the coming months. This will hopefully be a multi-site project and have several artists involved.

Upcoming!

“Kindred” a solo exhibition by Demarcus McGaughey at Sweet Lorraine Gallery Opening on February 4th!

“Kindred” is mixed-media artist Demarcus McGaughey’s most intimate and revealing series of work yet. One might describe it as his “long walk home.” Reflective and poignant, it comprises a multitude of timeless reminders of family moments. “Kindred” honors the sometimes-forgotten ancestry of Black Americans while acknowledging the cultural contribution of his family beyond enslavement.

The series comprises over 40 mixed media pieces exploring memory, identity, and spirituality and are inspired by his rediscovery of family photographs and cherished stories. These images reacquainted Demarcus with his history and reaffirmed for him the importance of understanding the impact of his family’s existence in the American south for more than five generations.

Opening February 4th at Brooklyn Art Cluster Gallery
