The Library Director is seeking an enthusiastic, service-minded, community-oriented Library Assistant I to fill one vacancy in the Hanford Branch and one vacancy in the Avenal Branch. As a member of an enthusiastic team, the Library Assistant I will provide direct customer service to answer questions, perform circulation functions, as well as assist customers in the use of library resources and the use of technologies. Successful candidates will be passionate, creative team players with excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills. The Library Assistant I will work in a collaborative environment with other staff to complete daily tasks, assist with programs and community outreach. The Kings County Library encompasses seven branch libraries serving the cities of Hanford, Lemoore, Corcoran, Armona, and Avenal, plus the unincorporated areas of Kettleman City and Stratford. Future vacancies for this position may be filled from the eligible list to be established. The expected life of the eligible list is six months.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Library Assistant classification series is utilized in the County Library system. Library Assistant I is the entry level in this library support staff series. Primary assignment is either in the Hanford Main Library or one or more library branches in the County. Working initially under close supervision, incumbents provide assistance and service to patrons while learning library policies, procedures and operations. Incumbents are expected to advance to Library Assistant II after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency necessary to meet the qualifications for the higher level class.

Carries out a variety of paraprofessional duties at the library circulation desk; promotes a positive image of the library in the community by providing prompt, accurate and courteous assistance to library patrons; checks books and other materials in and out by using library computer software applications to enter, query and retrieve information; issues library cards, and maintains and updates patron records; shelves and keeps organized books, periodicals and other library materials; answers routine questions regarding library services, programs and events, either in person or over the telephone; assists patrons in their use of library materials and facilities, including public access computers; answers questions regarding and resolves routine disputes on accounts, collects and records payment of fines, and makes adjustments according to department policy; handles routine patron problems or complaints, as authorized and trained; assists professional staff and library management with community programs and promotions, including design and set-up of displays and exhibits; provides a variety of general library support services, such as opening and closing, maintaining records, preparing reports, performing minor or routine building and equipment maintenance, and overseeing or training volunteers; maintains library in a neat and clean condition; prepares new library material for circulation; may prepare spine labels; may mend books; performs routine clerical or special assignments; when assigned to library headquarters, receives and assembles book shipments for branch libraries; operates a variety of retail and office equipment including but not limited to cash registers, and audio/visual and computer equipment; performs other duties as assigned.
