City of Longview News Community Celebrations Planned For Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Community organizers and the City of Longview will host a variety of events from Friday, Jan. 13, to Monday, Jan. 16, to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. 

Celebrations will kick-off with an opening reception and jazz concert featuring Mack Guice and Low D starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, at the Longview Community Center. Ticket price $10.

A parade will be held on Saturday, Jan. 14, along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.  The parade will begin on Pittman Street and conclude at Foster Middle School.  Parade entries are $10, and the deadline to register to participate is Friday, Jan. 6.  Registration information can be found at LongviewTexas.gov/MLK.

Following the parade, there will be a community festival at Broughton Park and Recreation Center from Noon to 3 p.m., which will include music, children’s activities, food, and vendors. The festival will also include the official ribbon cutting and grand opening for the renovated Broughton Recreation Center - the ribbon cutting will take place at Noon.

Saturday will also include a Humanitarian Award Celebration at 6:30 p.m. at Parkview Baptist Church with Reverend James Webb.

On Monday, Jan. 16, residents are invited to participate at 11 a.m. in a march from Broughton Park to Mt. Olive Baptist Church where a Memorial Service will be held at Noon honoring Dr. King’s legacy of social justice.
