Kentler International Drawing Space is pleased to present HAECCEITY, a solo exhibition of nine monumental drawings by WY-based artist Shelby Shadwell.

Shadwell creates large-scale, monochromatic drawings using charcoal and pastel on polyester. The works featured in HAECCEITY depict polymer “space blankets” and lumps of coal rendered in extreme detail. Their zoomed-in compositions move between representation and abstraction, emphasizing the texture and sheen of each material. The drawings’ surfaces are dense and dark with areas of high contrast achieved by layering and erasing.

The word haecceity refers to the essence or “this-ness” of a particular thing. Shadwell spotlights and magnifies these natural and manmade objects to reveal their innate presence. Each drawing reads as a portrait; the relationships between them are open to interpretation. Shadwell’s illusory, hyper-realistic style activates the viewer as his subjects remain silent and still. His work pushes the boundaries of genre and challenges audiences to look closer.

A brochure with an essay by Jason Franz accompanies the exhibition.
Special thanks to the Sam Fox School of Art and Design at Washington University in St. Louis, MO and the Wyoming Arts Council for helping to fund this show.
