Humphreys College dates its founding to the fall of 1896, when John R. Humphreys, Sr., assumed academic administration of what was then called the Stockton Business College, Normal School, and Telegraphic Institute. The College has been in continuous service to the central San Joaquin Valley since that time, making it the first institution of higher education in the area. The philosophy and objectives of its founder have remained with the College, being a small, independent school dedicated to higher education.John R. Humphreys, Jr. became president of the college in 1937.The school became known as "Humphreys College" in 1947 when it was incorporated as a nonprofit education corporation under the California Education Code. It is governed by a Board of Trustees. In 1950, this Board established a four-year evening law school. The College moved to its current location on the corner of Benjamin Holt Drive and Inglewood Avenue in 1966.In 1972, Humphreys College was accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)Robert G. Humphreys became the third President of the College in 1980. Three generations of Humphreys had maintained the leadership of the College since its founding. The law school became accredited by the Committee of Bar Examiners of the California State Bar in 1983.In 1987, a second campus was started in Modesto, California. The College received accreditation by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in 1992.The College has gone through great expansion between 1991 and 2004 adding a new law school and courtroom, a new library housing undergraduate and law libraries, a student lounge, and classrooms. While kept current, the curriculum today is still clearly related to the curriculum as it was when the College was founded, focusing on both liberal arts and career preparation. The expansion of the College, both in Stockton and Modesto, shows the commitment Humphreys College has to the community and the growth of education opportunities for all.
