The Martinsburg Police Department is responsible for enforcing the laws and regulations designed to protect the life and property of the citizens of the City and to improve their quality of life.

The probationary Police Officer participates in an extensive training program. The program consists of field training while under the direct supervision of a field training officer as well as the successful completion of approximately 15 weeks training at the West Virginia State Police Academy in Charleston WV. The Academy is a live-in, military style academy, which prepares and trains you for the responsibilities of the job.

The Officer will be under a probationary status for one year from the time of hire.

The responsibilities of a Martinsburg Police Officer include patrolling a designated area to preserve peace and prevent the commission of crime. Officers enforce motor vehicle laws and parking regulations, direct traffic, conduct investigations at the scene of a crime, administer first aid, gather evidence, obtain witness statements, effect arrests, testify in court and make community contacts. The professional conscientious performance of duties is carried out with limited supervision. The work of a Police Officer involves considerable risk and requires use of sound, independent judgment.
