About Us

The Rotary Club of Morro Bay was chartered on April 17, 1950. The 25 charter members elected Earl S. Roberts the club's first president. Other officers were Vice President G.D. Kelker and Sergeant-at-Arms Carl Dyer. With the passing of Dave Reid, there are no living charter members.

The San Luis Obispo Rotary Club was Morro Bay's sponsor and Al Ferrini, president of that club, was chairman of the Charter Night Program, which was held June 3, 1950, at the Morro Bay Presbyterian Church hall. Dinner was served by the staff of the Anderson Grill. Then District Governor William Claasen presented the charter to President Roberts. Ruby Long, second president of the Morro Bay Club, was general chairman of the affair. Gus Beck was master of ceremonies. Mrs. Dick Harris handled decorations.

The fledging club grew steadily. By 1955, membership totaled 42, and by 1960 there were 53 members. Meeting places changed frequently, and the club has met in Powell's Café, the Circle Inn, Breakers, the Golden Tee (now the Inn at Morro Bay), the Tiger's Folly, and the T.C. Steak House.

Members of the club have been active in District affairs. The club has produced two District Governors: the late Mac Little in 1978-79 and Walt Milburn in 1983-84. More recently, Chungsam Doh moved to Morro Bay from Bakersfield. He was District Governor in 1998-99.
