St. James Mercy Health System has provided health care services to residents in the Hornell area for over 100 years. During this time, St. James Mercy has evolved from its humble beginnings in a small, rural farmhouse to the diverse and comprehensive system it is today. As a member of one of the nation's largest health care systems, Catholic Health East, we have the added resources of a network of health care providers from across the east coast.

St. James Mercy remains committed to the mission on which we were founded "to respond with innovation and excellence in meeting the diverse health needs of the rural community which it serves, with special concern for the poor, underserved and disadvantaged." As members of a community of healing we have accepted as a way of living, core values that guide our behavior in delivering quality, compassionate health care.

The most recent accomplishment has been the completion of a major expansion of the long term care facility located on Bethesda Drive in North Hornell. McAuley Manor at Mercycare now provides long term care for 120 residents with specialized units for Alzheimer's/Dementia patients as well as ventilator dependent patients.

Comprehensive hospital services include a state-of-the-art imaging department, 24 hour emergency department, inpatient and outpatient surgical services, intensive care unit and maternity services. Over the past several years an emphasis has been placed on outpatient services and primary care. The Southern Tier Health Associates network of physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants now number over 25 providers of primary and specialty care which has greatly enhanced access to health services for residents of our area.

St. James Mercy Health also provides behavioral health services to residents of the area and beyond. We offer inpatient and outpatient alcohol rehabilitation services, inpatient adult and adolescent psychiatry as well as a psychiatric day treatment program.

Prevention and wellness programs have grown significantly in the past five years. St. James Mercy Health now serves as the lead agency for grant funded efforts under the auspices of the Wellness Council of the Southern Tier, which includes cancer screening and healthy heart initiatives. Through St. James Mercy Health Works, area businesses and industry can access worksite programs related to back safety, drug testing and health screenings.
