Smithville Elementary School was built in1920 as Smithville High School and converted to the elementary school in1939. There are currently about 330 students attending Smithville Elementary. Each of the 14 classrooms has an average of 21 students. Special classes for all students include art, music, physical education, computer lab, and library. Along with 14 classroom teachers, SES employees 2 Special Education teachers and 2 Title-One teachers and a Guidance Counselor. After school tutoring and Ohio Reads programs are offered to students needing additional support or those wishing to improve their reading skills.

The Character Counts program, coordinated by the school guidance counselor, features character enhancing words which are stressed to the students in numerous ways. Students learn positive ways to deal with difficult situations.

Annual school events are Grandparents' Day, Book Fair, Harvest Day, National School Lunch Week, Fun Fair, Santa's Workshop, Track and Field Day, and a special Christmas Program. Numerous assemblies and field trips are enjoyed by all!
