About Us

The learning environment at Wasuma Elementary School is very positive. Opportunities for student recognition occur regularly. At quarterly, school-wide award assemblies 4.0 and 3.5 Honor Roll students in grades 4th-8th are recognized. Students with perfect attendance and excellent attendance are also recognized at these assemblies. Teachers also provide incentives for learning and good behavior in their individual classrooms. Wasuma Spirit Pencils are awarded randomly by the principal to those students exemplifying school spirit. The Parent Club sponsors educational assemblies and family activities after school and in the evenings throughout the year. Wasuma School is involved in a Mountain Area Sports League for students in grades 6th-8th. Students compete in volleyball, flag football, soccer, and basketball - as well as cross country and track with other schools in the area. A noon time sports program for the junior high students in the spring is enjoyed by almost all of the 7th-8th grade students. A learn-to-ski program is held every winter for students in grades 4th-8th. The Wasuma Student Council also sponsors dress-up days, dances, candy grams sales, food drives, and Wacky Relays days. The co-curricular and extra-curricular programs at Wasuma Elementary School offer something for all students. The Wasuma PTA is also very active in providing activities and experiences that promote a positive learning environment at the school.

Parents are encouraged to take an active role in their child's education while enrolled at Wasuma Elementary School. Parent volunteers are encouraged to work in the classrooms with individual and small groups of students. For volunteers who are interested, parent volunteer training is held each fall. The Wasuma Parent Club is very active in promoting activities that benefit the entire student population. They hold a variety of fund raisers that support classroom instruction and allow teachers to provide those "extras" that make the educational experience at Wasuma unique. Communication with the Wasuma community takes place regularly. The PTA sponsors a monthly newsletter complete with a calendar of school events taking place during the weeks ahead. Parent conferences are held twice a year--allowing teachers and parents to discuss student academic progress. Students in grades 4th-8th receive weekly grade checks every Monday throughout the school year. These checks allow parents to regularly keep abreast of their child's progress and track their academic efforts.

There is one administrator assigned to Wasuma School. All learning opportunities at Wasuma School are based on California Standards. Teachers utilize a wide variety of approaches and strategies to help meet individual student needs across all curricular areas. Instructional assistants work with students who are having difficulty mastering important concepts or who are not having success in meeting grade level standards. A student study team process is in place to assist students who are making little progress. Teachers are encouraged to collaborate on a regular basis about assessment strategies and instructional techniques. Regular assessment providing a great deal of information about student learning is a part of each student's experience at Wasuma School.
