About Us:

The Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in November 1966 in an effort to bring together persons interested in the preservation of the rich history of Woodford County.

Big Spring Church, built circa 1819, was purchased by the Society in 1969. The building, which had undergone numerous renovations over the years, was restored to its original Tidewater architectural style during the 1970s.

Today the building houses the Historical Society's genealogy library and historical museum, which began operation in 1980.

The Genealogy Library includes many microfilmed records and documents, subject files, surname family files, books of genealogies on hundreds of Woodford County families, books on Woodford County history and other Kentucky counties, and books on Virginia and other states.

Researchers will also find scrapbooks of local interest, compiled by Historical Society members throughout the years, photographs dating from the late nineteenth century, and photocopies of original marriage bonds from the Woodford County Courthouse from 1789 through 1902.

The library also contains books on Kentucky history, genealogy, art, architecture, biographies, horses, literature, and more.

The museum features numerous artifacts which relate to Woodford County history.
