The Art League of Long Island is delighted to announce the return of the Long Island Craft Guild (LICG) to the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery with a repeat exhibition of “Seeing the Other.” Originally scheduled for September 30, 2023, to October 27, 2023, the exhibition was unfortunately interrupted by flooding rains on the day of the Opening Reception, causing the Art League to close its doors for four months due to water damage. With the Art League reopening on February 6, 2024, after the necessary repairs, the opportunity for the LICG to showcase their artwork is now available once again.

“Seeing the Other” is an exhibit where artists delve beneath the surface of their subjects to portray their essence, forging connections to something beyond themselves. The exhibition, featuring works in clay, fiber, mixed media, metal, glass, paper, and wood, will run from March 23 through April 20, 2024, at the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery of the Art League of Long Island in Dix Hills. The gallery is free to the public and open daily Tuesday through Saturday.  All are cordially invited to attend the artists’ opening reception on Saturday, March 30th, from 1-3 PM.

Artists participating in the exhibition have pushed boundaries by exploring new media or techniques to convey an “other-ness” in their creations. Approximately half of the entries are sculptural, complemented by stunning wall work, promising a dynamic and diverse showcase of craftsmanship.

The exhibition’s juror, Jerelyn Hanrahan, is a distinguished artist, professor, and curator renowned for her work across various cultural platforms, focusing on interactive public art, traditional, and conceptually based work. Hanrahan’s two- and three-dimensional works, along with her public sculptures, museum, and gallery installations, have been exhibited, published, and awarded internationally.

Celebrating its 64th anniversary, the Long Island Craft Guild is dedicated to fostering the crafts movement and facilitating the exchange of information and experiences for the benefit of artists and the community. Membership in the Guild is open to all individuals interested in the creation and exhibition of fine craft. As an independent, non-profit educational organization, the LICG has provided educational and informational services, regular meetings and workshops, and a sense of community among craftspeople since its establishment in 1959.
