Happy almost August! Beginning August 1, we will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays through Labor Day Weekend for our summer hours.

Join us on Tuesday, August 2 for a book talk and signing by Ann Leary, New York Times bestselling author of The Good House! Ann Leary will be discussing her most recent novel, The Foundling. Loosely based on a true story about the author’s grandmother, The Foundling is about two childhood friends who meet again years later at a controversial asylum - one as an employee; the other, an inmate. Hickory Stick Bookshop will be selling copies of The Foundling at the event. This Lu Burke Literary Series program, like all of our events for adults, is free to attend and open to anyone regardless of town of residency. Registration is required.

Teens in Grades 6-12 are invited to join us for a Comics and Mindfulness Drawing Workshop on Friday, August 5 from 3:30-4:30pm. Cartoonist Cara Bean will walk us through a series of creative exercises that can help lessen anxiety, build confidence, and grow creativity. No prior art experience is required! Registration is required as space is limited.

Local author Jenna Landmon is visiting our Youth Services Department on Tuesday, August 16 to read from her book Little Paisley Makes a Big Difference. Learn about the writing process and receive coloring pages from the book. Copies of Little Paisley Makes a Big Difference will be available for purchase at the event. All proceeds go to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. This children’s program is available to all ages.

The Friends of the Southbury Public Library: Lobby Book Sale

The Friends of the Southbury Public Library are having a Lobby Book Sale during the month of August. Located in the lobby of the Southbury Public Library, this sale features books in many different categories, including Children’s, Cookbooks, Gardening, Fiction and more, and is available during library open hours.

Brinker Fireplace Room Display: Pomperaug River Watershed Coalition

This month’s Pomperaug River Watershed Coalition display showcases the rivers, ponds, and aquifer that make up the Pomperaug Watershed, and highlights the important role you have in protecting the rivers you love, the water you drink, and the water you use every day.

Each time you drink a glass of water, wash your hands, prepare a meal, walk past a tree, or watch the rain fall, recognize that that clean water is an essential ingredient for life. Whether it is supporting human consumption or ecological functions, Southbury is fortunate to have ready access to clean water. Only 2.5% of the world’s water is freshwater and only 0.007% of that is deemed clean enough and available to drink. This is why it is critically important to protect this vital resource.

The main stem of the Pomperaug River flows approximately 13 miles from the center of Woodbury through the town of Southbury, and ultimately discharges into the Housatonic River at Lake Zoar. The Pomperaug River is fed by a network of tributaries that flow downhill from Roxbury, Washington, Bethlehem, Morris, and Watertown. One of the most important geological features of the Pomperaug Watershed is the underlying stratified-drift aquifer, which is the predominant source of potable water in these towns as well as Middlebury and Oxford.

Artist of the Month: May Phillips

The Gloria Cachion Gallery at the Southbury Public Library is showcasing the art of May Phillips from Tuesday, August 2, 2022, through Tuesday, August 30, 2022.

May Phillips' love of painting is expressed in her work. The freshness of color is revealed in her watercolor and acrylic paintings. She is equally proficient in pen and ink drawings. Jack Flynn, Timothy Clark, Carlton Plummer, Al Stine and other well-known artists have influenced May’s style. She has taught watercolor painting for many years, and is currently teaching watercolor and pen and ink paintings at Arts Escape in Southbury, CT.

May’s artwork has been exhibited at the State of Connecticut Legislative Building, a variety of galleries, restaurants, business establishments, and various Juried Art Shows. In 1994 and 1998, May’s original design and painted Christmas Ornaments were selected to hang on the White House Christmas tree in the Blue Room. Her latest artwork can be seen at Center Frame and Art Gallery in West Hartford, CT, Nino’s Restaurant Walls in Waterbury, CT, and the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The exhibit will be open during regular library hours: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:30am to 5:30pm, and Tuesday and Thursday 9:30am to 9:00pm. In addition, the exhibit will also be available online as a virtual gallery here. Please visit our website to learn more.
