Join us May 30th - June 2nd for the 5th annual North Carolina Trail Days in Elkin, NC. Nestled between 2 state parks with the Mountains-to-Sea Trail running down its Main Steet, Elkin is a short drive from the Blue Ridge Parkway and borders the Yadkin River making it a true Trail Town. Spend the weekend in Elkin and enjoy themed and self-guided hikes, river excursions, outdoor exhibitors, live music, art and more! Mark your calendar to come explore the network of trails and experience the greater Elkin vibe!

9:00 AM: NC Mountains-to-Sea Trail Segment 6 Thru-Hike: Day 1

Stone Mountain Country Store; 1050 John P. Frank Pkwy, Traphill, NC 28625

NEW in 2024 The chance to thru-hike section 6 of the MST from West to East as a guided hike! Staring inside Stone Mountain State Park, get great views of the Blue Ridge Escarpment as you gradually descend towards the Yadkin Valley and make it to Wells Knob for a night of camping (9.3 miles). Some shuttle will be available and camp meal (Dinner & breakfast) on Wells Knob will be included with registration fee. Amenities (restaurants, supplies, alternative lodging) will be available in Elkin when reached on Friday late afternoon. If you are interested in all or part of our hike/paddle fill out the form when you click 'Register'. 5:00 PM: Sunset on Wolf Rock Yoga Hike

Stone Mountain State Park Backpacking Lot

Enjoy a beautiful, moderate skill-level hike and yoga practice at the summit of Wolf Rock in Stone Mountain. Pack a towel or mat, but please pack with the hike in mind. Yoga class will be appropriate for all levels, no yoga experience necessary! This hike will be 45min-1 hour straight. The climb is on switchback trails but will be a steady incline for the whole way up! If you are not used to hiking or that level of physical activity please consider our Homestead Hike on Friday 5/31 at 9AM.Proceeds from this hike go to Yoga on Main and Friends of Stone Mountain

Stone Mountain Horse Trailer Parking lot

See two hidden cemeteries and hear some of history behind pioneering families in these parts. This is an easy 2-mile out-and-back hike (partly off-trail) inside Stone Mountain State Park, with several stops for stories along the way. Allot about two hours to complete.

12:00PM - 3:00 PM: Yadkin River Clean-Up and Paddle

Elkin access at Crater Park; 310 Standard St., Elkin

Join the Yadkin Riverkeeper (YRK), the Elkin Trails Association, and other volunteers to remove garbage and debris while paddling down the Yadkin from Ronda to Crater Park (6.8 miles) in Elkin. Registration is recommended for this event. YRK will provide a limited number of boats to volunteers that need them, but we are encouraging volunteers to BYOboat. Paddlers will drop off boats in Ronda between 11-11:30 AM, drive to Crater Park for lunch, and be shuttled back to Ronda to begin the cleanup. Volunteers will receive a free lunch.

Enjoy a beautiful 1-mile out-and-back hike to a waterfall AND learn some techniques with painting 'en plein air' with expert, Heidi Nisbett, of Sketching Summits. LIMITED SPACE! Also, feel free to bring your own materials/paints. If weather turns, this event will be held in the conference room at the Yadkin Valley Heritage and Trails Center.

3:30 PM: Kids Trout Fishing at Big Elkin Creek

Bring the kids for fly and cast fishing demos on the Big Elkin. While you're hanging out on the water, get to know Watershed Now along with our local Trout Unlimited chapter, and hear what they are doing to steward our waters and educate the public

This one is for the dogs and their humans who love to hit the trails together! All well-mannered attendees and their dogs are welcome to join an easy hike around 2 miles out-and-back on the scenic and historic Elkin and Alleghany Rail Trail.

Stone Mountain Backpacking Lot: 3042 Frank Pkwy, Roaring Gap

Join the Friends of Stone Mountain as they lead you on a hike along Widows Creek. This is part of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail inside the park, and it leads to the primitive campsite in the park. See the lesser-visited Upper Widow Creek Falls on this hike. There is a significant climb for the first half mile of this hike, but the trail levels out nicely after the initial climb.

4:00PM - 6:00PM: Overmountain Victory Trail Association Encampment + MST Homecoming March

Overmountain Victory Trail between Galloway Memorial Episcopal Church and Elkin Public Library (beside Big Elkin Creek Dam)

Flashback to the Revolution with the encampment of the Overmountain Victory Trail. Starting at 5:30, a march will begin crossing the bridge on W. Main St. before turning south on N. Front St. and ending at the Heritage and Trails Center. The march will feature a fife and drum corps of the OVTA. Following the march will be a 'flotilla' of completers of the NC Mountains-to-Sea Trail.

Stone Mountain Backpacking Lot; 3042 Frank Pkwy, Raoring Gap

Visit 4 of the 7 major waterfalls (over 30ft high) along the MST. See Widows Creek Falls, Stone Mountain Falls, Middle and Lower Falls. Approximately 5 miles out-and-back, easy-moderate hike. Expect to take several hours and bring water and appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear!

9:00AM - 10:30AM: Name your Route' Stone Mountain Climbs

Stone Mountain Lower Parking Lot; Meet at trailhead near restrooms

1. Would you like to learn how to identify rock climbing routes from afar? 2. Would you like to laugh at some of the names chosen for these routes? 3. Would you like to learn about how to get started rock climbing in general? Pack your binoculars and your fancy camera lenses and let's hike to the ideal location with a few people rock climbing and rappelling on the South Face of Stone Mountain. The hike distance is about 1.5 miles each way with an elevation gain of about 400 feet. The last time we did the hike for this event it took about 30 minutes to reach the overlook.

Garden Creek Baptist Church in Stone Mountain State Park

This is a Moderate/Strenuous 2-mile hike. Explore several preserved liquor stills on this hike along Garden Creek at Stone Mountain State Park. Much of this hike will be off-trail. Dress accordingly. Meet at the Garden Creek Baptist Church INSIDE Stone Mountain Park on the main road through the park.

9:00 AM: Annual Yadkin River Run 5K/10K

Jonesville Greenway Trailhead; 116 Plaza St., Jonesville

All Proceeds go to Assist the Elkin VFW Post 7794 in PTSD awareness and treatment for military and first responders.
This race is an out and back on the beautiful Jonesville Greenway Trail which meanders alongside the Yadkin River. The trail offers moderate terrain topped with screenings as well as natural surfaces. Take in the beautiful scenery as the trail passes along area campgrounds, wildlife, and even an iconic covered bridge, all of which make this not just another race, but an experience you won’t soon forget through the heart of the Yadkin Valley.

This is a Moderate/Strenuous 2-mile hike. Explore some of the former liquor stills on this hike along Garden Creek at Stone Mountain State Park. Much of this hike will be off-trail. Dress accordingly. Meet at the Garden Creek Baptist Church INSIDE Stone Mountain Park on the main road through the park.
