New Orleans Jazz:
Jazz artist Halley Shoenberg has been a dynamic presence in the greater Washington, DC area for several decades. In addition to leading her own exciting ensembles, she is hotly in demand performing and recording on saxophone and clarinet with other top shelf groups in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia and she is a Maryland State Arts Council Touring Artist.
She has earned a fine reputation as a performer, arranger and composer, conversant in presenting musical styles from traditional to modern jazz, entertaining listeners in venues ranging from intimate clubs to huge ballrooms or festivals.

11 AM - Nyame Nti West African Drumming:

The Nyame Nti West African Drummers will perform four traditional West African rhythms: Kou Kou, Jondon Wolosodon, Balanta, and Kakilambe. The group will also lead an audience participation experience and demonstrate the African dance called Funga.

The goal of the Annapolis Jazz and Roots Festival is to foster an appreciation for cultural diversity and artistic excellence in a cordial and inviting atmosphere. Our inspiring, educational and fun activities entertain participants of many interests, ages and backgrounds. We are especially interested in teaming up with state, county and city government, non-profit organizations and businesses, schools and libraries. Our aim is to amplify the effects of existing programs and services which have the potential for greater public access.

11 AM - Lecture: Chris Haley

Archivist, actor and writer Chris Haley will give a presentation on indentured servitude and slavery in Maryland from its implementation for the early settlers to the abolition of slavery with the passage of Maryland's 1864 state constitution. Haley's talk will include information about Matthias de Sousa, the original settler abolitionist aboard the Arc and the Dove who rose from indentured servitude to become a member of the Maryland General Assembly, as well as the ways indentured servitude and slavery affected the lives of Black adults and their children both during and after 1864.

Bossa Nova and Beyond
with special guests Leonardo and Bruno Lucini

The 2023 Annapolis Jazz and Roots Festival closes with a performance by hometown favorites, guitarist Dick Rausch and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Elizabeth Melvin. The duo will perform with their group Amoroso in a program titled "Bossa Nova and Beyond." For this special performance they have invited two beloved Brazilian musicians. Bassist Leonardo Lucini and his brother, percussionist Bruno Lucini, are part of a musical family from Rio de Janeiro. Both have played a key role in popularizing Brazilian musical styles in the United States and have been particularly influential in and around the nation's capital. World traveled pianist/keyboard player and educator Harry Appelman completes the band. Expect great rhythm, melody and harmony from these seasoned performers.
