Governor Newsom Signs AB 257, Setting Stage for $22 Pay Next Year For the Fast Food Industry
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed the Fast-Food Recovery Act into law(AB 257), giving restaurant-chain employees more input over wages and working conditions. The landmark law creates a
10-member Fast Food Council with equal numbers of workers’ delegates and employers’ representatives, along with two state officials, empowered to set minimum standards for wages, hours and working conditions in California. The law caps minimum wage increases for fast food restaurants chain employees. Consequently, more than 100 of these restaurants will pay their employees $22 per hour next year pending an increase of cost of living in comparison to the statewide minimum of $15.50 per hour.
Legislature Extends $1.4 Billion Lifeline to California's Last Operating Nuclear Plant
California State lawmakers approved SB 846, which would keep the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant open for five more years, meaning until 2027. The operator, Pacific Gas & Electric will receive a $1.4 billion loan to refurbish the structure. The bill will include stronger protections for ratepayers, and the loan would be allocated in increments. Governor Newsom received tremendous backlash for signing the bill from environmentalists, who argued that the law contradicts a 2016 agreement made by PG&E and environmental and labor groups in order to cease operations of the 37-year-old power plant beginning 2024. Experts have expressed praise for the extension of power plant as it will support California’s grid stability for consumers in the during the transition to net zero carbon emission.
