CAC Board Member Profile: Steve Rubin

Steve is a retired CPA after 40 years of practice primarily as a founder and partner of Weitzman & Rubin, PC, Certified Public Accountants. He is a long-time resident of Huntington where he and his wife, Shelly, have raised two children. Steve also is a member of the Board of Directors of the Alpern Family

Foundation and is Treasurer of the organization.

Cinema Arts Centre: How long has the Cinema Arts Centre been a part of your life?

Steve Rubin: Over thirty years

CAC: What first drew you to the Cinema?

SR: Love of movies. The Cinema provided the unique

opportunity to see independent films of high quality.

CAC: Why is Board Service important to you?

SR: It gives me the opportunity to participate in the future of the Cinema.

CAC: You serve as both Chair of the Finance Committee and Co-Chair of our Board. (Also due to the passing of our previous Co-Chair, you were the sole leader through much of this difficult time.) How did these crucial roles intensify during our extended closure after the pandemic?

SR: They became more daunting – particularly the logistics during the lock-down. (Thank goodness for Zoom!) To ensure that the Cinema would be able to survive the pandemic, new strategies had to be developed and executed. Most important was the securing of Federal grants and loans to provide working capital during the pandemic. Thanks to the joint effort of the Board and particularly the Cinema staff such funding was secured and utilized.

CAC: What were your biggest challenges in leading the Cinema Arts Centre to our reopening this past May in our revitalized space?

SR: I think the biggest challenge was determining the date the Cinema could re-open. The renovation of the Cinema had so many complexities that the re-opening date remained elusive until the beginning of spring.

CAC: What do you think are the most important factors in ensuring the Cinema’s future?

SR: Bringing the Cinema to a wider audience thus cultivating new membership and potentially new Board members.

CAC: What would you like our members and patrons to understand most about Board service in general and your role in particular?

SR: I think Board service is a unique opportunity to participate in the future of the Cinema. Regarding my role as co-chair, I find it exhilarating to work with both the Board and Cinema staff.

CAC: What is one of the most important needs that the Cinema fills for our community, from your perspective?

SR: A sense of community. A place where people can come to see a thought-provoking movie or special program, eat in the café or garden, and exchange ideas with others.

All of us at the Cinema Arts Centre are so grateful for the meaningful service of Steve Rubin, and all of members of our Board of Directors.
