Teen Project Studio + 2.0 is an intensive, six-week interdisciplinary arts program for teens and young adults ages 14 to 23. TPS is a FREE program limited to 15 students and will meet twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4 to 6pm). The program is a unique opportunity to experience and learn about visual arts & creative industries in an interactive and challenging way. It is also an opportunity to meet other participants with similar interests and eagerness to learn and create.

For Spring 2023, the theme is A Bronx Tale: Graffiti (Style Writing) to Street Art. This class will cover the history of New York City graffiti highlighting Bronx artists. This is a studio-based exploration into Style Writing. Students will be encouraged to develop their own tags to work with, while also documenting street work they see/find interesting and adding them to the class Instagram hashtag #BRAC_TPS_2023 for further discussion in class. The aim of the class is to have students create several finished works in addition to understanding how graffiti as a passion can be turned into a career in both commercial and fine arts jobs.

The class will be taught by Jonathan Berry, a New York based artist primarily focused on public works utilizing aerosol paint. He has been exploring the concrete and abstract relationships between letters since 1983. While letters are at the core of Berry’s work, they are not the sole entry point into each work, with Berry creating dichotomous works that can be accessed by both experienced style writers and laymen. Painting both sanctioned and unsanctioned works, Berry has participated in festivals from Tahiti, to Denmark, to the streets of Hong Kong. In 2019, he painted his largest work to date (approximately 120x40 meters) as an invited artist for Rust Magic; a mural festival in Edmonton, CA bringing international artists together to paint large scale works across the city.

Participants are not required to have art or design experience, just the willingness to learn, share, and create to make a difference in the development of projects and public art in the city.
