Dear Friends,
As I write to you I am finishing up my fifth week as the new Executive Director of Casita Maria. Since I've started, we have renovated the Casita Maria Gallery, opened the exhibition Read to A Child by Bronx artist Tijay Mohammed and renovated our kitchen. All of these collective efforts help provide a welcoming program space for participants and families to both learn and celebrate in.

And there is so much more that we have been busy doing! We are now accepting applications for Summer Day Camp and for musicians to audition for our 9 piece Latin jazz ensemble, BronX BandA featuring Arturo O'Farrill.

And I know you all have the dates saved for Casita's biggest event of the year, the South Bronx Culture Festival! We look forward to welcoming you at Father Gigante Plaza in front of St. Athanasius Church from June 2 - June 4.

I invite you to read on to learn how you can get more involved with Casita Maria and to take a look at our Career page to see if there is a position that you would like to apply for. As you attend events and visit our Casita, please take a moment to say hello and to share how we can best serve you, your family and the community.

In partnership,
Felix A. Urrutia Jr.
Executive Director

Exhibition: Celebrate Yourself Read to a Child
Read to A Child is an exploration of home, identity, self-love, and appreciation by Bronx-based and Ghanaian-born artist Tijay Mohammed. On view in the Casita Maria Gallery through August 18, 2023.

This exhibition, part of Casita Maria’s CelebARTE / Celebrate Yourself program, features 11 collaged works from the artist’s The Ache for Home series. The work is created by upcycling materials like magazines, newspapers, flyers, and posters to construct detailed portraits of children experiencing everyday life– being read to by a loving father, feeling supported as they create art, or expressing joy as they play with friends and family.
