The Cello Festival of Southern Utah will be held on September 15-16, 2023 in Utah Tech University’s Eccles Fine Arts Center. 

Dedicated to promoting the learning, enjoyment, and community-involvement in cello playing, the two-day Festival will offer a lots of wonderful opportunities for cellists of all ages and all levels.

This year we are glad to have Horacio Contreras - University of North Texas and Dr. Theodore Buchholz - University of Arizona as the Festival’s featured artist and clinicians.

The festival events include large cello ensemble sessions and guest-artist and faculty performances, chamber music, cello master classes, the ASTA Cello Lecture Series, and other workshop and performance opportunities.

6:00 - 7:30 pm : Dinner on your own, self-practice, free time   

7:30–8:45pm : Horacio Contreras Artist Recital - Concert Hall

11:00-11:50 : ASTA Cello Lecture Series "Latin American Cello Music and its Composers" with Horacio Contreras - Concert Hall

11:00-11:50 : “Technique Session for Beginners” with Peter Romney - Cox Auditorium

12:00-1:00pm : Boxed lunch, Chamber Music in the Foyer - special performance by Hsin Hou Sun & display by vendors - Eccles Lobby

1:00 - 1:50pm : Cello Masterclass for Intermediate Cellists # 1 with Dr. Ka-Wai Yu - Eccles 150

1:00-1:50pm : Panel Discussion on Improvisation with Dr. Stephen Mitton & Cameron Smith - EFAC 155

1:00-1:50pm : Cello Masterclass for Advanced Cellists #1 with Horacio Contreras - Concert Hall

1:00 - 1:50pm : Stretch & Relax for Cellists with Debra Vradenburg - EFAC 156

2:00 - 3:20pm : Matinee Chamber Concert featuring Brimhall Cello Competition first-prize winners and guest artists Susan Lamb Cook, Cameron Smith, Nicole Pinnell, Cello Mania - Concert Hall

3:30 - 4:00pm : Short Break, with snacks provided by the festival - Eccles Lobby

4:00 - 4:50pm : Cello Masterclass for Advanced Cellists #2 (with Dr. Theodore Buchholz) - Concert Hall

4:00 - 4:50pm : Cello Purchase, Bow and Maintenance" Roundtable discussion with Desert Strings, Ed Candland Bow Rehair, Soto Violins & Gliga Violins - EFAC156

4:00-4:50pm : Modern Styles with Nicole Pinnell - EFAC 150

4:00 - 4:50pm : Cello Masterclass for Intermediate Cellists # 2 (with Tamra Baca) - EFAC 155

5:00 - 6:30pm : Dinner on your own, self-practice, free time   

6:30 - 7:20pm : Dress Rehearsal/ Sound Check - Concert Hall, EFAC 150, EFAC 156 each group will take turn using the Concert Hall

7:30 - 8:20pm : Final Cello Ensemble Concert - Eccles Concert Hall
