Chandler, Ariz. – Chandler Public Library cardholders no longer have to worry about fines when returning books past their due dates. The City of Chandler Library Board voted to eliminate overdue library fines at its May board meeting.

Libraries are community gathering spaces where books, technology, internet access and other services are available to all. Recently, many libraries around the state and across the country have eliminated overdue fines. Studies have shown that these fines only create barriers for access to the services that libraries provide, especially for households with financial hardships.

“One of the pillars of library service is equitable access,” said Rachelle Kuzyk, Library Manager. “Removing fines for overdue materials will ensure that everyone who is seeking information can find it at the Chandler Public Library.”

With this policy change, Library Administration and City of Chandler leadership continue to encourage all residents to benefit from the many resources available at Chandler Public Library. In addition to fine elimination, the Board also voted to reduce the cost of printing from 20 cents to 10 cents for black and white prints and $1.00 to 25 cents for color prints.

Replacement fees for lost or damaged material will remain in place, as outlined in the Library Cardholder Policy on the Chandler Public Library website.
