Youth Advisory Board Creates Events for Young Cinema Lovers

This month, the current incarnation of the Cinema Arts Centre’s Youth Advisory Board marks one year of activities. The Youth Advisory Board is a group of 14- through 25- year-olds who meet monthly to plan and promote special events specifically aimed at young people in our area. Throughout the past year, the YAB has brought in a wide range of new audience members with a mix of coming-of-age movies, interactive cinema experiences, and recent cult favorites.

In August, the Youth Advisory Board held a 48-Hour Film Contest, in which participants submitted films that were created within a single weekend. To ensure films were made entirely within that time frame, certain elements were announced at the launch of the event on Friday evening: a character named Nickee Coco, footage of a pencil snapping, and the line, “These pretzels are making me thirsty.” In addition to being required to include these elements, each team was randomly assigned a genre in which to work.

All of the shorts were screened at the Cinema Arts Centre on Friday, September 29th, with honors given to all the teams who participated. The YAB worked together to judge winning films, awarding the top three films free memberships for all team members. The winning team, Team Shrimp Fried Rice, also won $500 and had their film shown for a full week before all regular CAC movies. You can watch all the films on CAC social media in the coming week.

The next Youth Advisory Board screening will be a presentation of the spooky stop-motion gem Coraline at 7:30 pm on October 27th, with a Halloween-themed party after the show in the Cinema’s Sky Room Café. Tickets are available now – come join in the fun with a great film! Upcoming events will include Pitch Perfect and Chicago.

If you or someone you know is 14 to 25 and interested in getting involved with the Youth Advisory Board, you can email Ted Cavooris at [email protected]. You can also follow the YAB on Instagram for updates about all of their activities.

50th Anniversary Programs and Keepsake Journal

In celebration of the Cinema Arts Centre’s 50th Anniversary, the CAC Through the Decades series will present some favorite films from each decade that we have been delivering our mission on Long Island. Each screening will be followed by a special reception, culminating in a full-facility event on December 1, 2023, the day we turn 50! Proceeds will benefit the programs and operations of the Cinema Arts Centre so that we can continue to bring the widest range of film programs and unique special events to our community for decades to come.
