From: City Of Corpus Christi

At January 24, 2023 scheduled City Council meeting, Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette Guajardo and the City Council approved amending Corpus Christi Water (CCW)’s operating budget to include appropriating $1.3 million for a backflow prevention program following a settlement from 2021. The action is vital in enhancing the City’s resiliency measures in preventing future backflow issues.

The funds will be used for test kits, storage, furnishing new equipment, customer service inspections, database software, and employee training at CCW. Additionally, the program will provide businesses that are registered with the City’s Development Services Department and have licensed backflow inspectors with test kits and Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester training on a first-come, first-served basis.

“Backflow prevention protects the quality and safety of our water supply,” Mayor Guajardo said. “This program will help ensure that dangerous contaminants are not introduced into the water system.”

Today's approval supports the City’s goal of maintaining CCW’s superior water system rating with the Texas Commission for Environmental Quality (TCEQ) through increased backflow prevention.
