City Council Authorizes Preparation of Contract for Purchase of Property for City's Inner Harbor Seawater Desalination Plant

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – At today's regularly scheduled City Council meeting, the City's seawater desalination project took another step forward with Mayor Paulette Guajardo and City Council authorizing preparation of final contract documents to purchase property for a seawater desalination plant.

The contract documents to be completed include the purchase of approximately 12.5 acres of property and 11 acres of easements from Flint Hills Resources Corpus Christi, LLC, and related entities in the vicinity of Nueces Bay Boulevard, Broadway Street, and the Inner Harbor in the amount of $5,455,000. The purchase would be funded through a low-interest State Water Implementation Fund for Texas loan that has already been approved for the City by the Texas Water Development Board. The City's water rate model sufficiently covers the loan repayment.

As the regional water planner, producer, and distributor for the Coastal Bend, the City of Corpus Christi provides water to 500,000 people in seven counties across the region daily. Today's action advances the City's goal of adding a drought-proof source of water to its supply, ensuring reliable water for the region for future growth.  

The final contract for land purchase will be voted on by Mayor and City Council in the coming weeks.
