From: City of Alhambra

Low-income households in Alhambra can now apply to receive financial assistance for delinquent residential water bills. The Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP) is a federally funded program that offers low-income households a one-time payment to help pay outstanding bills for residential water or wastewater costs.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government allocated funding to California to help households struggling to afford the costs of water. To participate, customers must apply directly to the Maravilla Foundation, the local service provider selected by the state to help the City of Alhambra implement the program.

The amount of assistance that customers may receive will depend on the balance of the household’s water bills. Households whose utility payments are included in their rent may also be eligible for LIHWAP.

LIHWAP offers a one-time payment of up to $2,000 to help:

Pay residential water or wastewater utility bills; and

Prevent other adverse effects such as debt collection or placement of liens.

LIHWAP is a one-time program that is available for approximately one-year and will permanently close in August 2023. Funding for eligible residents is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Customers who are interested in applying are encouraged to contact the Maravilla Foundation. Please note, the City of Alhambra cannot accept any applications for this program; all applicants must go through the local service provider, Maravilla Foundation. Visit them online at www.maravilla.org or contact them at (323) 721-4162.
