ANN ARBOR, Mich., July 22, 2022 — Effective July 31, 2022, current Deputy Chief Aimee Metzer will assume the role of Interim Chief of Police. Metzer has served in the Ann Arbor Police Department since 1999, and has extensive patrol, detective, and management experience.

On July 13, Ann Arbor Police Chief Michael Cox announced he will be returning home to Boston to assume the role of Police Commissioner. His last day with the city is July 31, 2022.

“The City of Ann Arbor extends congratulations to Chief Cox upon his opportunity to return to Boston to serve as its Police Commissioner.  For him, it’s a chance to go home, a city where he provided decades of service to its residents,” said City of Ann Arbor Administrator Milton Dohoney Jr. “I want to thank him for serving Ann Arbor, and helping us to advance the department during a critical time for the evolution of policing.”

According to Dohoney, he will provide a recommendation to City Council for a permanent replacement for Chief Cox after a nationwide search has been completed. Further details will be provided when available.
