At the December 6, 2022 Regular Meeting, Cape Canaveral City Council unanimously supported the design concept prepared by Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) known as Alternative 2. This design is a conceptual rendering incorporating medians and access management lanes along the length of A1A from George King Blvd to International Drive in support of traffic calming, sense of place, and speed reduction in our community. FDOT requested direction from City Council on this topic, as the presented design concepts dictated total horizontal distance between curbs along the roadway. City Council also directed staff to amend the existing Resolution 2022-16 to include additional sentiments including investigations into signalized intersections and/or access at other cross roads along A1A, no- or low-maintenance landscaping, and delineation considerations for the shared path for bikes and pedestrians.
The conceptual design for Alternative 2 above was provided to the City for consideration during discussion and community engagement. At this time, FDOT District 5 staff is working to solidify the design for the roadway, with design completion currently slated for summer 2023. Right-of-Way acquisition and construction are still several years down the line for this project, which relates to the FDOT District 5 International Drive Realignment and Signalized Intersection Project. More information about both projects and other FDOT projects are located at www.CFLRoads.com, FDOT’s District 5 Projects Website.
2023 Sea Oat Planting Event Details
The City will be hosting its annual sea oat planting event on Saturday, February 11, 2023 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or until all plants have been planted. This year the City will be planting 16,320 sea oats and we need your help! Trays of sea oats will be placed at the east end of all City-owned beach crossovers along with all necessary supplies (i.e. wooden dowels and hydration gel packs) and planting instructions. Simply arrive at a public beach crossover of your choosing (there are 17 in total) and start planting! Dedicated City volunteers called “Plant Buddies” will be stationed at various crossovers to assist, and will be wearing high-vis yellow safety vests. They will be able to assist you with any planting questions and show individuals where to plant. City Staff will be walking the beach throughout the event to assist and answer any question residents may have as well.
ONLY plant sea oats along and within the City’s western dune-line. Do not plant any sea oats east of the primary dune-line! It is advised you bring water, snacks, and wear sunscreen and/or a hat/sunglasses. If there are no sea oats left to plant at any given crossover, please move north or south to the next crossover until you find more trays.
Thank you for your volunteerism and your passion for helping the City become more resilient! Learn more about the benefits of sea oats via the link below from UF/IFAS.
