City Of Chandler And Kyrene School District Enter Agreement For Shared Use Of Athletic Facilities

The City of Chandler and Kyrene School District have renewed an intergovernmental agreement to share use of athletic facilities, expanding capacity for both the City and the District to serve the community.

This partnership specifically continues the operation and use of four lighted ball fields on property owned by the District with field lights owned by the City. These fields, located at Aprende Middle School, can be used for City recreational programs at no charge. Conversely, the City of Chandler will allow certain park and aquatic facilities to be used by District schools within City limits for educational or athletic purposes. Usage fees would not apply.

“Kyrene School District is always happy to partner with the City of Chandler, and this agreement allows us to provide additional services to our west Chandler families,” said Superintendent Laura Toenjes. “It’s a win-win,” she added.

Of the 25 in-person schools in the Kyrene School District, seven are located in Chandler. In this agreement, the District will provide field maintenance and the City will maintain the lights. The District will also allocate field time equitably among community groups for weekend use as requested prior to each season. And, the District will allow the City to have priority use on one field on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and every other weekend.

“This agreement is a way to demonstrate how a government and school district can work together for mutually beneficial results,” said Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke. “The use of these fields will provide more opportunities for Chandler’s community groups and recreational programs to play on well-maintained fields.”

This agreement is in place through April 30, 2027.
