CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – At today's regularly scheduled City Council meeting, Mayor Paulette Guajardo and the City Council approved an Advanced Funding Agreement (AFA) with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for the construction of four transportation safety improvement projects approved as part of the Highway Safety Improvements Program (HSIP).

The federal program funds projects that reduce traffic fatalities and severe injuries on public roads. The program covers 90 percent of construction costs. The remaining 10 percent is covered by local participation. During today’s meeting, the local match approved as part of the AFA is $37,448.

The proposed safety enhancements consist of a high-visibility pedestrian crosswalk with a raised median, warning signs, and flashing beacons to improve the safety of pedestrian crossings in school zones. These projects are in Council Districts 2, 3, and 4.

Project areas include:

-Everhart Road, between Holly Road and South Shea Parkway

-Gollihar Road, between Helen Street and Green Grove Drive

-McArdle Road, between Clare Drive and Nile Drive

-South Staples Street between Dody Street and Driftwood Street

“Nothing is more important than the safety of our students, parents, and all residents that travel in school zones,” Mayor Guajardo said. “This is a major step that will protect drivers and pedestrians.”

Bidding on the construction projects is scheduled for April.
