City Council Receives Progress Update on Texas State Aquarium Expansion at North Beach
New Wildlife Rescue Center Set To Open In March 2023

Mayor Paulette Guajardo and City Council received a construction progress update on the new Texas State Aquarium Wildlife Rescue Center from President and CEO Jesse Gilbert. The Wildlife Rescue Center at North Beach is scheduled to open in March 2023.

The Wildlife Rescue Center will have state-of-the-art veterinary medical equipment, an interpretive center, and a multimedia theater to help share the Wildlife Rescue story.

The Aquarium’s goal is to increase the capacity for wildlife rescue and response, facilitate learning for veterinary medical students and veterinary technologists, and foster a better understanding for the public regarding what each of us can do to help protect wildlife.

Upon completion of the facility, the public will have unparalleled access to witness the treatment and rehabilitation of thousands of shorebirds, raptors (birds of prey), marine mammals, and sea turtles.

The 20-thousand-square-foot Wildlife Rescue Center will be adjacent to the Aquarium, replacing the existing facilities on Rincon Road.

Since 2005, the Aquarium’s Wildlife Rescue Program has taken in 8,413 animals and has released 3,869 animals back into the wild.

In September, the Corpus Christi Fire Department donated a retired City ambulance to the TSA for use when responding to various wildlife emergencies.
