The City of Davis announced today that a community input meeting will be held on Friday, September 23, 2022 from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.at the Central Park Sycamore Grove (401 C Street) to determine Natalie Corona’s remembrance feature as part of the new Central Park Splash Pad Project. All are welcome to attend this meeting hosted by City staff in conjunction with a City Council subcommittee and a community-based Natalie Corona Committee.

Staff from Yolo Conflict Resolution Center will facilitate the community input meeting to help engage and prioritize ideas to be recommended to the City Council at an upcoming City Council meeting. The meeting will include an overview, introductions and roundtable exercises. Ideas for the remembrance include, but are not limited to: naming any or all parts of the splash/play area after Natalie Corona, adding a memorial plaque or installing Natalie Corona-inspired public art.

“Officer Natalie Corona paid the ultimate price while serving and protecting our community as a Police Officer,” said Mayor Lucas Frerichs. “She was a shining star who was respected and admired by her coworkers and the community. It is fitting that a remembrance of her be integrated into the Central Park Splash Pad where there will be love, laughter and joy on a daily basis.”

In January 2019 after the death of Police Officer Natalie Corona, the Davis City Council directed staff to explore a memorial or remembrance to recognize Officer Corona’s service to the community. The Davis City Council also unanimously voted to establish a community-based Natalie Corona Committee that includes the city manager, police chief, mayor and community members.

In December 2021, the City of Davis received a grant of $2.7 million by the Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Grant Program to renovate Central Park. The City Council at the time expressed unanimous support to include a feature honoring Natalie Corona at this site. The renovated park will include an ADA accessible, interactive water play feature, or splash pad, near the existing universal play structure and restroom, shade structures, public art, pollinator gardens, drought-tolerant native landscaping and a rehabilitated great lawn with recycled UV-treated water for irrigation.
