Music by the Sea Concert This Friday Night

Join us tomorrow night for the saxophone and piano duo of Dr. Isaac López and Dr. Andrés Jaramillo, who will be performing a concert that combines Western contemporary classical music harmony with the polyrhythms of Afro-Latino jazz at the Encinitas Library.

Date: Friday, May 20

Time: Doors open at 6:45 p.m. for general admission. Concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

Modal Alternatives Project (MAP) Workshop #2 - Your Feedback is Needed - Now Virtual on Zoom Webinar Only

The City of Encinitas is preparing an Implementation Plan for the 2018 Active Transportation Plan (ATP). The consultant team and city staff have created prioritization criteria which has been applied to bicycle and pedestrian projects in the ATP. We need your assistance in reviewing the prioritization for each of the five communities and citywide projects.

Information provided at the workshop will be made available on the project website the following day if you would like to give feedback online. 7th Annual Zero Waste Fair - Learn About Zero Waste Living

The City of Encinitas and “I Love A Clean San Diego” invite San Diego County residents to celebrate and learn about the importance of zero waste livingwith environmental resources from across the San Diego region!

Whether you are curious about what zero waste means or are actively working towards a low-waste lifestyle, this unique family-friendly event covers a variety of sustainability topics. Visitors will be able to:

- Attend mini segments ranging from sustainable fashion to current environmental justice initiatives

- Tour educational booths hosted by local zero waste businesses and organizations

- Listen to our panel of sustainability experts

- Learn about at least one real world action to make an immediate impact

Green Building Ordinance 2021-13 Update

The City’s Green Building Ordinance, Ordinance 2021-13, was adopted by city council on Oct. 27, 2021 and is anticipated to be approved by the California Energy Commission May 24. The ordinance will be effective immediately upon approval and applicable to all projects that meet the ordinance criteria and have yet to apply for a building permit. The ordinance affects new construction and some remodels, including commercial, residential, and mixed-use development.

Ordinance 2021-13 will enact the following new requirements:

- Residential additions and alterations with a permit value of $50,000 or greater must install certain energy efficiency upgrades.

- Electric-only power source for all new residential and non-residential buildings. No gas infrastructure allowed.

- Existing non-residential buildings adding 1,000 square feet or having a permit value of $200,000 or greater will be required to install certain energy efficiency updates.

- All new non-residential and existing non-residential additions that increase the total roof area by at least 1,000 square feet or alterations with a permit value of at least $1,000,000 that affect at least 75% of the gross floor area are required to install solar photovoltaic equipment to power the building.

The ordinance aligns with the City’s Climate Action Plan (CAP) and will help achieve the City’s greenhouse gas reduction goals.

Grow Food, End Hunger and Save the Planet - Free Saturday Workshops

You can learn how to help end hunger in our community by growing a garden! Learn how to plant organic seedlings in your garden, tips for growing a lot of food in small spaces, simple and tasty recipes using fresh bounty from the garden, and delicious ways to reduce food waste.

Workshop takeaways include organic seed packets, organic seedlings, local garden resources and planting guides, tricks of the trade for a zero-waste kitchen, the Homegrown Hunger Relief program and more! This workshop is sponsored by the City of Encinitas and hosted by Healthy Day Partners.

Summer Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Guide - Available Now

This issue of the recreation guide, available to read online on the city’s website, features a fresh lineup of instructional classes, sports leagues, and senior programs, as well as dozens of summer camps like cooking, acting, computer skills, and much more. Learn about visual and performing arts, parks and places to play, and the return of some awesome events including Sunday Summer Concerts by the Sea at Moonlight Beach. Printed guides will be mailed to Encinitas residents beginning this weekend.

Registration for summer session classes and programs begins Monday, May 16. As summer camp registration began on March 7, many of our most popular summer beach programs are already full, but there are many more camps to choose from!
