EVANSTON, IL - Evanston’s 2nd Ward Councilmember Peter Braithwaite announced last night that his final Evanston City Council meeting will be Monday, July 11.

Braithwaite has served as the 2nd Ward's representative since being appointed by Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl in 2011. “The City of Evanston is an amazing community. It has been an honor and privilege to represent the 2nd Ward and serve on our City Council,” said Braithwaite.

"Thank you to Evanston residents, particularly the 2nd Ward and our larger Black community. Over the past 12 years, I have enjoyed the amazing work with my City Council colleagues, and our City's extraordinary staff,” said Braithwaite. "With the passing of my mother, it has given me time to reflect and refocus my priorities."

"I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Councilmember Braithwaite for more than a decade of service to our city," said Mayor Daniel Biss. "His leadership as chair of the City's Reparations Committee and Minority, Women, Evanston Based Enterprise (M/W/EBE) Committee embody his commitment to the Black community, his understanding of the interconnection between economic opportunity and social mobility, and his dedication to all Evanston residents. His experience and love of the institution will be missed."

Information about filling the 2nd Ward vacancy will be announced in the coming days. The process will include an open call for candidates, a public meeting to hear from candidates directly, and an opportunity for residents to provide their feedback.
