MONTHLY NEWSLETTER FOR THE CITY OF SEDALIA IN THIS ISSUE

In March of this year the City of Sedalia was awarded a $5,000 Marketing Heritage and Cultural Tourism in Rural Missouri grant from Missouri Humanities through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). While the grant award was $5,000 with no match requirement the Cityprovided a $5,000 match for a total of $10,000 to be used for a mural installation on the south wall of 209 S. Ohio.

Harry and Julie Hoffert, owners of Stone Laser Imaging at 209 S. Ohio allowed the mural to be placed on their building. Then after hearing about the project, Robert and Barbara Hayden donated another $10,000 allowing the project to be even larger!!

The City and nearby merchants identified the need for better lighting and paving to increase pedestrian’s safety as this alley is used as a conduit between public parking and area businesses. With the installation of the new mural, downtown Sedalia’s first alley activation will not only address safety concerns but give downtown Sedalia another outdoor space for people to gather!

There was a previous agreement between the building owners and artist, Stefanie Azier-Sattler for her to be the muralist that would work on the project. Stephanie received formal training through the Kansas City Art Institute and State Fair Community College. You might have seen Stephanie’s previous work in the area as she completed a mural in 2020 on the south side of the Wildflower Beauty Co. building in downtown Sedalia at 703 S. Ohio Avenue and she completed a mural along the Spirit Trail in Knob Noster, MO in 2021 that measures a total of 110 feet in length.

The mural depicts the host building (formerly the Smith & Cotton Building) back in the days when it still boasted all of its original architectural glory, a steam train, P40 “Flying Tiger” and B2 Spirit Stealth Bomber, both familiar to Whiteman Air Force Base and an eagle’s face.

Check out the photos on the next page to see the mural from start to finish. You can also stop by downtown Sedalia and see it in person!
