Calling all civic-minded residents: Join Sugar Land’s new leadership program
It seemed like every time Paulina Valero clicked to refresh the webpage, a new application had been submitted. Sugar Land Leaders had launched less than 24 hours earlier and it was apparent residents were excited.

Valero, the city’s community engagement manager, was excited, too. After months of research, she had designed a new program that would provide an avenue for residents who are passionate about Sugar Land and want to find ways – big and small – to help move the city forward.

From a transparency standpoint, we’re not just giving residents the city’s playbook. We’re tossing them a jersey and asking them to play whatever position they want on the team.”

In Sugar Land Leaders, residents will take a deep dive into the city’s highest priorities through interactive activities and discussions. Additionally, the city has partnered with the Wall Street Journal Bestselling authors of “Love as a Business Strategy” who will help participants refine their leadership style through interactive workshops that teach skills such as effective communication, giving and receiving feedback, motivating teams, and more.

“What sets this program apart is we’re not just telling people what the city does and how it operates, we’re inviting them to explore where we’re going in the future and providing them the tools to make a difference in their communities,” Valero said.

Members of the Sugar Land Leaders program will participate in eight sessions held over six months from January to June on Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. To be eligible for the program, applicants must reside within Sugar Land city limits, have been a resident for at least one year, be at least 18 years of age, and be willing to commit to attending all sessions.

“Our ultimate goal is to create trust between the residents and the City so we can collaborate in achieving the City’s bold vision for the future,” Valero said. “From a transparency standpoint, we’re not just giving residents the city’s playbook. We’re tossing them a jersey and asking them to play whatever position they want on the team.”

Applications are still open through 11:59 p.m. Dec. 4. The program is free.
