Extreme cold front on the way

The City's Public Safety and Emergency Management personnel encourage residents to prepare for an upcoming cold front expected to hit North Texas over the next few days. The US National Weather Service Fort Worth Texas says temperatures will fall dramatically during the day on Thursday, Dec. 22, with dangerously cold wind chills Thursday night into Friday, Dec. 23.

Take steps now to protect the "Four Ps:"  People, Pets, Pipes, and Plants! Cover exposed pipes and drip faucets indoors during the freeze. More information about pet safety during cold weather is available on the Friends of The Colony Animal Services social media. Additional preparedness information is available further below in this newsletter or by visiting the city's emergency management website, www.TheColonyTx.gov/BePrepared.

Also, residents of The Colony who may needassistance with temporary shelteringduring this week's winter weather event may call The Colony Police Department's non-emergency line at 972-625-1887. Dispatchers will then put residents in contact with local social service representatives who can provide assistance. In addition, Relevant Life Church in Lewisville (331 E. Church St.) is expected to be available as an emergency warming-station as an extension of the Salvation Army-Lewisville.

As you take steps to stay warm this week, The Colony Fire Department reminds you to practice fire safety. According to the National Fire Protection Association, home fires occur more in winter than any other season. Now's a good time to check your smoke & carbon monoxide alarms, and be careful not to overload your powerstrips with heating appliances.

Tree recycling to run Dec. 26 thru Jan. 8

Residents wishing to drop off their Christmas trees for recycling may begin doing so Dec. 26, continuing through Jan. 8, 2023. The tree-recycling site is at the south end of the Public Services parking lot off of East Lake Highlands Drive, across from the Animal Shelter. Signs will be posted directing residents to the site. Trees must have all lights, ornaments, tinsel and bases removed. No artificial or flocked trees. Free compost will be available sometime in the spring on a first-come, first-served basis. Please bring your own containers. Additional compost may also be available later in the year. For information, call Environmental Services at 972-624-3131.

TCPD earns state accreditation

For the third straight cycle, The Colony Police Department has received the award of "Accredited Law Enforcement Agency" from the Texas Police Chiefs Association Law Enforcement Accreditation Program, which evaluates a police department’s compliance with over 170 best business practices for Texas Law Enforcement. Attention motorists, cyclists, and trail-users! A new pedestrian beacon crosswalk has been installed at the intersection of the Park Loop Trail and North Colony Boulevard, near Firehouse No. 2. This amenity is identical to the lighted crosswalk installed on Paige Road in recent years. When activated, the light will briefly flash yellow to alert motorists of the need to stop before turning red, allowing trail users to cross safely.
