Dodgers Select Wander Suero

The Los Angeles Dodgers selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Wander Suero and placed right-handed pitcher Gus Varland on the injured list with right knee inflammation.

Suero, 31, returns for his third stint with the Dodgers after appearing in four games with an 8.10 ERA (6 ER/6.2 IP) and seven strikeouts against four walks. With Triple-A Oklahoma City, he was 5-3 with a 3.40 ERA (18 ER/47.2 IP) with 51 strikeouts and was 16-for-19 in save chances. He has been in the Major Leagues parts of four seasons with Washington (2018-2021) and Los Angeles (2023) and he is a combined 14-13 with a 4.73 ERA (101 ER/192.0 IP) and 207 strikeouts in 188 Major League games. He was originally signed by the Washington Nationals as an amateur free agent out of Sabana Larga, Dominican Republic on February 2, 2010.

Varland, 26, made eight appearances for the Dodgers, going 1-1 with a 3.09 ERA (4 ER/11.2 IP) and 14 strikeouts against eight walks. He started the season with the Brewers, making eight appearances and going 0-0 with an 11.42 ERA (11 ER/8.2 IP) and six strikeouts. In his five combined minor league seasons, he is 9-13 with a 4.14 ERA (96 ER/208.2 IP) and 226 strikeouts in 110 games. He was originally drafted by the Oakland Athletics in 14th round of the 2018 First Year Player Draft out of Concordia University.
