The Diary of Anne Frank

THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK tells the story of Anne and her family’s struggles while hiding during World War II. The family hoped to evade the Nazis because of their Jewish faith. Anne Frank emerges from history a living, lyrical, intensely gifted young girl who confronts her rapidly changing life and the increasing horror of her time with astonishing honesty, wit, and determination.

An impassioned drama about the lives of eight people hiding from the Nazis in a concealed storage attic, THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK captures the claustrophobic realities of their daily existence—their fear, their hope, their laughter, their grief.

NOTE FROM

THE

PRODUCING DIRECTOR

This week we open our 107th season at the Erie Playhouse with the gripping drama, THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK.  Wendy Kesselman’s new adaptation of the 1955 play by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett incorporates elements of the diary that were previously omitted, providing a clearer look at being a young woman fighting to stay alive in Nazi occupied Netherlands.
Hate is very prevalent in our culture today.  With hate crimes against marginalized groups on the rise, and anti-semitic hate crimes specifically up sixty percent, it is more important than ever to share Anne Frank’s story to highlight the dangers of allowing hate and prejudice to run rampant in our society and government. It is happening in our world and even our own country today.

We are also delighted to be hosting THE MULTICULTURAL DANCE NIGHT: ONE WORLD. ONE CITY. OUR CITY. ERIE. on April 4th.  Presented by Gannon University’s Making Connections 2023 Spring Speaker Series, offered by the College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, this event features local artists and is a great opportunity to connect with the various ethnic communities that enrich our city.
