Studio 64: Corcoran Art Studio

The Rise From our Earthly Ashes opens May 11, 2024 at the Firehouse Art Center. The exhibit is presented by the students of Studio Project, a teen art activism program.

Artists have been addressing the climate crisis for decades, focusing on issues from clean energy, air and water quality, environmental justice, climate change, endangered species and more. The public debate still rages on and we have to ask if anything is getting better, or is it just getting worse? As high schoolers we worry that the Earth’s countdown clock can’t be stopped. The earth is plagued with wildfires, rising ocean levels, rising temperatures and waning resources. We must find ways to revive our earth as our very future is at stake.

We present these concerns by the use of collage and recycled materials in this exhibit, focusing on reusing “waste” to create art. For the Spring semester we worked with Devin Urioste, Max Coleman and Yazz Atmore.

Devin Urioste was born and raised in Denver, CO, where he currently is a resident artist at Redline Contemporary Art Center and the Denver Botanic Gardens. With a diverse background in Hip-Hop, skateboarding, education, and music, Devin hopes to influence the next generation to express themselves and use that self expression as a tool to resist oppression. Devin’s work embodies community, knowledge, culture, understanding, and diversity.

Max Michael Coleman is an artist who began his life between the wooded shores of Connecticut and the magnificent peaks of northern Colorado. Graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2015, Max’s work seeks to take elements and techniques of centuries past, and apply them towards the modern day mediums of digital illustration and street art. Through the vehicle of his “SUN Lives Long” campaign, his murals and prints have taken an active stance towards promoting equality and awareness for the creatures of earth, as well as to impart a sense of kinship towards the planet. His work is able to sit comfortably in the present while at the same time harkening the viewer back to some anachronistic era of the past.

Yazz is a community organizer, creative & educator in Denver, Colorado where she continues to mentor and create with young artists as they explore their lives, stories, and passions through the beauty of art. Constantly, inspired by the youth + community she works with, Yazz continues to develop & deepened her own artistry as a collagist, muralist & floral enthusiast. Her art explores and dabbles in the themes of spirituality, ancient and ancestral wisdom, nature & afro-futurism through story telling, collaging and the building/ re-building of worlds. Her work is also heavily influenced by her spiritual journey as she loves exploring the spirit world with God, Ancestors & her Spirit Team. As an expressionist intuitive mixed media artist she creates breathtaking floral pieces, hand cut collage and digital works, with the use of bright bold colors, metallic paints and gold leaf.

Created in 2007 by the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, the Studio Project provides purposeful engagement in the arts and in social issues for high school aged youth. Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMoCA) began collaborating with the Firehouse Art Center in 2020 to facilitate the program, which is open to all 9th – 12th graders in Boulder and surrounding counties. Weekly meetings rotated during the Fall and Spring semesters to be held in person in Boulder at BMoCA, and in Longmont at Firehouse Art Center.

During each semester, the teens explore various art making styles & mediums, select guest artists to serve as artist mentors, discuss social justice issues & create opportunities to impact their communities. The program culminates in a Fall and Spring program ensing exhibit, which the teens organize and execute as a team.

CJ Corcoran is a 1991 graduate from the Savannah College of Art and Design B.F.A. Illustration. An expressionistic artist who is classically trained and works in many genres. Their work focuses on the figurative, landscape, Still life and more.
