Looking For America: Sculptor Hiram Powers' Falmouth Legacy

In the entryway of the Main Library sits an elegant sculpture hidden in plain sight. Executed by world-renowned American-born Hiram Powers (1805-1873), the piece delights the viewer who happens to look up and notice. 

Join us as Falmouth Museums on the Green's Executive Director Rachel Lovett shares her research on Powers, his notable works, and how this historic piece came into the collection of the Falmouth Public Library.

Imagine 2200: Climate Fiction For Future Ancestors

Join Tory Stephens of Grist Magazine, an independent non-profit media organization focused on the climate crisis, and learn how he created Imagine 2200: Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors. Imagine is a storytelling initiative that calls for fiction writers to envision the next 180 years of equitable climate progress, imagining intersectional worlds of abundance, adaptation, reform, and hope. The initiative also seeks narratives that center solutions from the communities most impacted by the climate crisis, and stories that are rooted in cultural authenticity (a deep sense of place, customs, cuisine, and more) and rich subcultures that uplift traditions not often seen in mainstream literature. Over the course of three years the project has encouraged 3,000 plus writers from 91 countries to submit stories, and of which 700,000 people have read. Writers and readers alike will enjoy this climate justice romp.

About the Speaker: Tory Stephens creates opportunities that transform organizations and shift culture. He is a resource generator and community builder for social justice issues, people, and movements. He currently works at Grist Magazine as their climate fiction creative manager, and uses storytelling to champion climate justice, and imagine green, clean, and just futures. In another life he owned a kick-**** streetwear company, and he would have gotten away with eating the last cookie too, if it weren't for his three meddling kids.

The Falmouth Public Library in partnership with Neighborhood Falmouth presents a talk on Falmouth's handicapped accessible open spaces by Vicky Lowell, a founder of The 300 Committee Land Trust.  This event is free and open to all. Please register as space is limited. 

Neighborhood Falmouth is a non-profit organization that provides support services to seniors in the Falmouth community. The organization aims to help seniors live independently and maintain their quality of life by providing services such as transportation, grocery shopping, yard work, minor home repairs, and friendly visits. Neighborhood Falmouth operates on a volunteer-based model, where volunteers from the community are matched with seniors who need assistance. This allows seniors to receive personalized support while also fostering a sense of community and connection among volunteers and seniors.

Alexandra Slater Author of Friends with Boats

Come hear former Falmouth resident Alexandra Slater discuss her popular new beach read, Friends with Boats!  She will read from her book and take questions from the audience. The book will be available to buy from Eight Cousins Books. Registration is requested as space is limited; please register by clicking the button below, or give us a call at 508-457-2555 x7.

The book is set in Falmouth and concerns three friends in their mid-40s, all of whom have become disillusioned with life in general. Things change with the arrival in town of an eligible bachelor! Soon all three women are vying for his attention, which naturally leads to humorous complications and a few reckonings. The book contains several references to places in Falmouth and nearby towns!

Ms. Slater grew up in Cleveland. Since her father was a research scientist and had a lab at MBL, the family summered in Woods Hole. As an adult, Ms. Slater moved to the Cape year-round after living in New York City.  While living in Falmouth Ms. Slater worked as a reporter at WCAI and as the education director at the Cotuit Center for the Arts. She is an award-winning journalist and writer. She graduated from Columbia University and attended Northwestern University’s Medill Graduate School of Journalism. Since then, she has been an actor, a comedian, a reporter, a creative writing teacher, and more! She splits her time between Boston and Cleveland now.

FPL Fiction Book Club - 1984 & Animal Farm

Please join us for the monthly meeting of the FPL Fiction Book Club as we discuss this month's selection 1984 by George Orwell.  We also encourage you to read Animal Farm as it will be discussed at the end if time permits.  Come pick up copies of the books at the reference desk and then join us to share you thoughts.  Registration is appreciated.  

"Includes two of George Orwell's novels about the dangers of tyranny, the corruption of the state, and the enslavement of the individual.  1984 is a political fiction and dystopian science fiction which is set in Airstrip One (formerly Great Britain), a province of the superstate Oceania in a world of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, and public manipulation.  Animal Farm is an allegorical novel that reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and then on into the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union."

Brett Warren Poetry Conversation

Join us on for a conversation and reading with Cape poet Brett Warren. Brett and Falmouth Public Library's Head of Adult Services Phoebe Acheson will read poems from Brett's 2023 book The Map of Unseen Things, and have a conversation about the poetry. Audience members will have time for questions and answers as well. Please register.

A long-time editor, Brett Warren holds a BA in English Literature from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her poetry has appeared in Canary, Cape Cod Poetry Review, The Comstock Review, Eunoia Review, Green Fuse, Halfway Down the Stairs, Harbor Review, Hole in the Head Review, ONE ART, One Sentence Poems, Pine Row Journal, Right Hand Pointing, Rise Up Review, and many other publications.
