The 2022 Oscar nominations came out this past week, and with them the usual surprises and affirmations of the year's best films and performances. If you miss the noms, you can see them listed here: https://www.oscars.org/oscars/ceremonies/2023

We're fortunate to be able to offer you several of the nominated films playing this week at the MV Film Center, including a return of last Spring's hit Everything Everywhere All At Once.

New This Week...

Everything Everywhere All At Once leads the pack with 11 Oscar nominations, including for Best Picture, as well as Director for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, and acting nominees for Stephanie Hsu, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ke Huy Quan, and Michelle Yeoh. The film is a hilarious and big-hearted sci-fi action adventure about an exhausted Chinese American woman (Michelle Yeoh) who can't seem to finish her taxes. When an inter-dimensional rupture unravels reality, an unlikely hero must channel her newfound powers to fight bizarre and bewildering dangers from the multiverse as the fate of the world hangs in the balance. A must see on a theater's Big Screen.

Exhibition On Screen: Canaletto And The Art Of Venice is an immersive journey into the life and art of Venice’s famous view-painter. No artist better captures the essence and allure of Venice than Giovanni Antonio Canal, better known as Canaletto. Cinema-goers will embark on their very own 21st century Grand Tour, visiting the sites enjoyed by their 18th century counterparts and immortalized in Canaletto’s views – from the Rialto Bridge to the Piazza San Marco, and the Palazzo Ducale to the Church of St. Giovanni e Paolo.

Continuing This Week...

Living is the story of an ordinary man, reduced by years of oppressive office routine to a shadow existence, who at the eleventh hour makes a supreme effort to turn his dull life into something wonderful. Oscar nom for lead Bill Nighy. LIVING sets a high bar for itself in setting out to remake a Kurosawa classic -- and director Oliver Hermanus and star Bill Nighy clear it in triumphant fashion.

The Fablemans received seven nominations, including Steven Spielberg for Best Director. Of note, John Williams became the oldest nominee for a competitive Oscar ever with, at 90, his nod for Best Original Score. THE FABELMANS is semi-autobiographical story loosely based on Spielberg's adolescence and first years as a filmmaker, told through an original story of the fictional Sammy Fabelman, a young aspiring filmmaker himself who explores how the power of films can help him see the truth about his dysfunctional family and those around him.

Broker — Drama written and directed by Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda (SHOPLIFTERS, LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON?). The film follows two brokers who sell orphaned infants, circumventing the bureaucracy of legal adoption, to affluent couples who can't have children of their own. After an infant's mother surprises the duo by returning to ensure her child finds a good home, the three embark on a journey to find the right couple, building an unlikely family of their own. Meanwhile, two detectives, Soo-jin and Lee, are on their trail. "You wouldn't think a movie about selling babies would be funny -- but it's funny.”

The Whale is a drama directed by Darren Aronofsky (THE BLACK SWAN) and written by Samuel D. Hunter, based on his 2012 play of the same name. It stars Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins, and

Samantha Morton. A reclusive English teacher (Brendan Fraser) suffering from severe obesity attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter (Sadie Sink) for one last chance at redemption. Brendan Fraser received an Oscar nom (Best Actor) for this once in a lifetime performance.
