The first day of school in Okaloosa County is August 10th.
The Library will be closed on August 19th for our county-wide staff day.
Okaloosa County primary elections are on August 23rd.

National Honey Bee Day, on the 3rd Saturday in August, is when beekeepers, beekeeping clubs, and honey bee enthusiasts celebrate honey bees and recognize their contribution to humans' everyday lives. National Honey Bee Day also pays homage to beekeepers, who ensure there are well-managed, healthy bees to pollinate crops. It was started in 2009 by a small group of beekeepers who obtained a formal proclamation by the USDA honoring honey bees and beekeeping.

World Elephant Day, on August 12th, is to create awareness of the elephants' plight and share solutions for the care of captive and wild elephants. African elephants face a poaching epidemic with the street value for ivory exceeding gold. The fragmentation of habitat creates isolation making breeding difficult and allowing poachers to find the elephants more easily. Asian elephants are often illegally captured in the wild and trafficked into the tourism industry. Both species are on the list of threatened species.

Women's Equality Day, on August 26th, is to commemorate the 1920 adoption of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote on the basis of sex. In 1971 and 1973, Congresswoman Bella Abzug introduced a resolution to designate August 26th as Women's Equality Day. In August 1973, Congress approved the resolution.
