GCS Names Newlin to Principal Supervisor, Hires Principal
Western High principal will lead group of principals

Greensboro, N.C. – Guilford County Schools (GCS) has made additional personnel changes in advance of the upcoming school year. Western High principal Gregory Newlin will become a principal supervisor with the district, and Trina McCoy will join the district as principal of Oak Hill Elementary. 

Newlin has served as principal at Western High since 2020, and during his tenure, enrollment has increased by nearly 300 students and the graduation rate reached an all-time high of 94.1 percent. Newlin also served as principal at Grimsley High for three years and as executive director of schools for Indianapolis Public Schools for six years. Newlin holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from College of Charleston and a master’s degree in educational leadership from The Citadel Military College of South Carolina. 

Trina McCoy has been principal at Monroeton Elementary in Rockingham County Schools since 2019 and served as principal of John W. Dillard Academy in that district from 2017 to 2019. In addition to working as an assistant principal and instructional coach, McCoy spent nine years as a social studies teacher at Hairston Middle. She holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Norfolk State University, a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Arkansas State University.
