Guilford County Schools will have a new Athletic Director. The Board of Education appointed Leigh Jones to the position at its meeting Tuesday night.

In her new role, Jones will be responsible for planning, organizing, and scheduling the athletic programs and student activities. She will also ensure that all students participating in athletics have met eligibility requirements and that the programs they are involved in are safe.

Jones is a seasoned athlete and educator. She has served as an assistant women’s basketball coach at her alma mater, Appalachian State University, and has been an award winning principal at schools across the Piedmont-Triad.

Jones most recently served as a school support officer, supervising and supporting principals as well as working with community agencies to address the needs of schools and their students. She will continue to supervise a small group of high school principals in the High Point area of the County as she transitions in this important leadership role.

“I am thrilled to welcome Leigh Jones to this new role,” GCS Superintendent Dr. Sharon Contreras says. “She is a treasured member of our team, understands the needs of our athletic program and students, and we look forward to her continued success in this new role.”

Jones will replace Leigh Hebbard, who is retiring. He started his tenure with the district as a teacher and athletic trainer at Andrews High in 1987.
