GCS IS CLOSED FOR LABOR DAY

Wednesday, September 6

Beyond Sports – Beyond Sports, an organization supporting recess and physical instruction at Title 1 schools, will begin working with Johnson Street Global Studies students. For six weeks, they’ll work with 3rd-6th grade students, teaching and exposing them to various sports during recess.

School Supplies Donation – Five Points Styling Salon partnered with other salons and barbershops in High Point over the summer to collect supplies for Shadybrook Elementary. The donations were collected to honor Saisette Spencer, a teacher who died in 2019. Mrs. Spencer was loved by students and staff members. On Wednesday at 10:00 a.m., the salons and Mrs. Spencer’s parents will drop off what they collected.

State Accountability – Guilford County Schools will share its latest accountability data following the formal release from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. There will be no interviews prior to the GCS media availability. More details to come next week.

Who loves good news!? You do!

High Point Central Band Rebrand – High Point Central’s band director has a plan to turn the program around. For Jaleel Wright, it’s personal. It has been Wright’s dream to work at High Point Central. He graduated in 2014 and was a part of the band when he says it was in its prime. Over the years, Wright says the program lost its steam and when he saw an opening at HPC, he knew he had to come back and provide students with the experience he received while he was a student. Learn about his journey and dream for the Marching Bison.

Twin Takeover *Cute alert*: Peck Elementary – Teachers at Peck Elementary are seeing double. Its two Pre-K programs have FOUR sets of twins this year.

New Teaching Twins – GCS welcomed dozens of international teachers to the district this summer. Two of them are a set of twins from Jamaica. The identical sisters do everything together and when one learned of an opportunity to come to America to be a teacher, her sister, a fellow educator knew she had to come along for the journey. While they came to the district together, they are teaching at separate schools. One is at Vandalia Elementary and the other is at Bessemer Elementary.
