Retirement Presentation – Tonight will be the last homecoming game for Coach Newman, the Athletic Director at Southeast High. He is retiring this year. At tonight’s game, his colleague and former military friend will present him with a challenge coin to commemorate his service to the district and the country. The coin and tonight’s game ball will be dropped in by skydivers at 7:00 p.m.

Monday, October 2

2023 College Fair – It is time for High School Students to begin the process of planning and applying for college. GCS has partnered with Shift_ed and the College Foundation of North Carolina for the NC College Fair. Schools from across the state will be on site to answer questions. Students can also learn about programs and scholarships that are available to assist with financing their education. The college fair is from 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. at 1921 W Gate City Blvd.

World Day of Bullying Prevention – The Guilford Parent Academy will host a virtual session for families about bullying prevention. Families can learn about what bullying is, common signs of bullying, how to help students prevent it and what communities can do to stop it. The first session is from noon to 1:00 p.m. Families can register by visiting the Guilford Parent Academy website or emailing parent [email protected].

Sylvia Mendez Newcomers School Ribbon Cutting – Guilford County Schools will host a ribbon cutting for the Sylvia Mendez Newcomers School. The school is the first named after a Latina person in North Carolina and the second of its kind in the state. Sylvia Mendez is a civil rights pioneer. At age eight, she played an instrumental role in the Mendez v. Westminster federal case, which ruled that school segregation of Hispanic children was unconstitutional. This case paved the way for the landmark Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education.

The Sylvia Mendez Newcomers School is for third through eleventh-grade students who live in and around High Point and are new to the United States. Students will attend the Newcomers school for one year before transitioning to a traditional or choice school. Sylvia Mendez and her family will join school, county and state leaders as the district cuts the ribbon and tours the new school. The event begins at 11:00 a.m. at 851 Ferndale Blvd.

GTCC Manufacturing Day - In honor of National Manufacturing Day, Guilford Technical Community College will host 200 Guilford County High School (GCS) students Friday, October 6, introducing them to various manufacturing programs offered at the college. The GCS students will visit eight stations in GTCC’s Center for Advanced Manufacturing building on its Jamestown campus which include classes/programs ranging from welding, automotive, diesel, collision repair, machining, HVAC, electrical, and construction. The students will also visit the Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (FAME) space at GTCC which includes the FAME lab and various manufacturing employers to learn about the NC FAME program requirements, selection process, and Advanced Manufacturing Technician (AMT) pathway. The event is from 10:00 a.m. to noon at 6012 W Gate City Blvd.
