ALL WORN OUT JUG BAND

August 6, 2023

4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

$15 Member/ $25 Non-member

There is something unique about Cape Cod’s All Worn Out Jug Band. In addition to being part of the “Post-Modern” Jug Band Movement, this group performs eclectic sets that include Jug Band classics interwoven with American roots music from traditional folk to Cajun, country, and gospel. You may hear a washtub or doghouse bass, washboard, kazoos, whistles, and of course, a jug — a full complement of strings including guitar, mandolin, ukulele, fiddle, banjo, and Dobro, and an occasional concertina.

The Band has been performing on Cape Cod since 2000 playing festivals and gigs from Falmouth to Provincetown to Nantucket. The current lineup includes Gregory Baird, Kevin Howard, Tim Dickey, Mary Loebig, and Edmund Robinson — they bring a decidedly animated stage presence to performances that can have audiences dancing in the aisles by the encore.

SUMMER EXHIBITION

Not to be missed!

End to End: Cape and Island Artists and the Land

Tidelines, Waves, and Ripples

As the recent steamy summer weather has sent many people to the water in search of relief, me included, I am reminded of many artists exhibiting in the current exhibition, End to End: Cape and Island Artists and the Land. Their work captures the constant movement of water and sand, whether caused by tides or the wind, sometimes one only needs to gaze at the art to be reminded of the power of the natural fluctuations of our water (ocean and pond) environment we are lucky to have in our midst.

This exhibit is supported in part by grants from the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency & the Falmouth and Sandwich Cultural Councils

The Woods Hole Foundation & Brabson Family Foundation.

The exhibit will remain on view through September 3, 2023.

July 10th - August 28, 2023

9:00 am - 10:00 am

Please join Yves Vandeplas for gentle Hatha yoga in the beautiful Highfield Hall & Gardens. This 1 hour morning hatha yoga class is a ritual to start the day. Hatha yoga is a gentle and slow-paced practice that emphasizes breath control and mindfulness.

Usually the class will start with the sun salutation sequence, a flowing series of postures that warms up the body, increases circulation, and focuses the mind. The sequence is then followed by a combination of standing and seated asanas (postures) that develop mobility, strength, and alignment. This practice will help you to energize your whole being and relax your mind. On a deeper level, it guides you to develop your awareness of your body, breath, and energy.

SCIENCE LECTURE SERIES

DIANA RUIZ WITH THE NATIVE LAND CONSERVANCY

August 9, 2023

5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

$10/ person

Join us for our lecture series collaborating with and showcasing the science work of institutions of the Falmouth area, providing interesting and educational presentations for the public. The theme for this year is exploring local environmental issues: what is being done in the ponds, streams, and marshes in the area to preserve our natural resources that are part of the identity of Cape Cod.

The Cape is home to a vibrant scientific community conducting meaningful environmental work with potentially wide impact. We are pleased to invite them to share their work with us.

This night we will hear from Diana Ruiz, PhD, of the Native Land Conservancy (NLC). Founded in 2012 in Mashpee, the NLC is the first Native-run land conservation group east of the Mississippi. The NLC believes that all land is sacred and worthy of special care. Diana will present on the NLC’s unique approach to protecting and restoring land for all living beings.
