NOTES FROM THE ARCHIVES

ARCHIVE RESEARCH -RE: SAVING HIGHFIELD PERIOD DATA TRANSFER VHS to DIGITAL

The latest archival research underway is transferring several video tapes made by Paul Rifkin between 1994 and the early 2000s. The following transcribes parts of a meeting that was recorded on March 16, 1994, led by Mary Lou Smith of the Falmouth Historical Commission. The subject was strategizing how to prevent the Conservatory from demolishing Highfield Hall after a 3-month Demolition Delay Law expired.

Members of the Save Highfield group took turns to speak, with future restoration architect, Noah Greenberg making a strong argument about historic preservation and community. “My name is Noah Greenberg, and I am on the Design Review Committee, and I am the Vice Chair of that committee. This issue has been bothering me a lot, and it is a very important one, I don’t see how this town can afford to give up much more of its heritage, we don’t have much left. Everyone can feel in their heart what is missing. Beebe Woods would be nothing but a bunch of woods without the manor house up there. When I first came to this town it was amazing to see the house with its land still intact. To let it go to waste and let them tear it down and leave a hole in the ground would be symbol to our children that we don’t care at all.

There is no argument that can be made that ‘the building is in such bad shape’ it really doesn’t matter how bad it is, it may be terrible, it is made out of wood, and we can replace the wood. But one of the important things about it is, as a society we would never be in the position again to afford to build like that. The only thing we can do now is to take it by its hands and build it into something wonderful.”

RECIPE OF THE MONTH FROM GAIL BLAKELY

PUMPKIN DONUT HOLES

Jesse Sheehan is one of my favorite cookbook authors. She has written The Vintage Baker as well as Snackable Bakes, both of which I use on a regular basis. Currently she is hard at work on a book that focuses on savory baking—she occasionally runs some recipes from that on her blog, Jesse Sheehan Bakes.

For this time of year, I thought her pumpkin donut holes with cinnamon sugar might be a good recipe for you to try. The photo is from her website, but you might recognize these as “dirt bombs,” one of the recipes we featured in a class last year. They are simple to make, and you will have two dozen donut holes that you can package in cellophane and give as gifts, or keep them all to yourself. They also freeze well, should you want to keep them on hand for a quick snack.
