Artist Spotlight: Helene Stracco of Brewster MA

Fiber Artist Helene Stracco has been working with textiles for many years, affording her the title of Master Weaver. She is currently experimenting with origami folding and natural resist dyeing techniques.

These “robes” are flat textiles which Stracco folds to imitate traditional Japanese clothing. The robe on the left is a double weave where Stracco has engineered the color placement on the loom, when the textile is off the loom and folded the colors mimic the sleeves and front of a traditional Japanese kimono.

UNDERSTORY EXHIBITION SPOTLIGHT - MUSHROOMS

Understory: A Juried Selection of Art by Members of The Guild of American Papercutters

Mushrooms are a theme within a theme in Understory. No doubt, mushrooms are invaluable to forest ecosystems by breaking down matter and absorbing nutrients for their host plants, additionally mushroom qualities serve as metaphor and other literary devices in several genres.

Psychoactive chemicals translate into magic and sorcery in folk and fairy tales, while bioactive function like decay, manifests into setting a sinister tone and mood in some science fiction writing. Whether hallucinogenic or natural composter of decaying matter, the mushroom inspired these artists: Kate Burkus, David Friedman, Gillian Jackson, David Jenkins, Mindy Shapiro, and Cindy Stinson-Chennel, all currently on view through July 12.

GARDEN WISH LIST

HIGHFIELD HALL IS LOOKING FOR HELP IN FULFILLING OUR WISH LIST

Thanks to generous donations these past weeks, we are well on our way to improving our West Garden and beyond!

Our wish for the West Garden is to plant the two back beds to finish this space. Photos from the early 1900s show these beds to be unfinished--even back then! The plan here calls for 18 white paniculata hydrangea at $50 each, 2 Ilex Steeds at $300 each, and 6 Ilex Steeds at $200 each. The white hydrangea will be an excellent backdrop for our summer weddings and the upright Steeds Holly will add formality and great winter interest to this garden.

If you would like to help us fulfill this wish list please email us or call 508-495-1878 ext. 306.
